MAXON OD-9 OVERDRIVE.
The Maxon OD-9 may look just like your old favorite, but that's
where the similarities end. With improved circuitry, the OD-9 stands at
the forefront of the Nine Series effects evolution.
The OD-9
uses a signal-distorting diode (Panasonic #MA150) that is located in
the amplifier stage's negative feedback loop (this stage also contains
the JRC4558 IC chip). Therefore, the OD-9 distorts signal in the
amplifier section itself which yields a smoother, milder, more natural
sounding distortion than a separate clipping stage. This is also the
reason that the IC type used in the circuit has such a large impact on
the unit's tone. Maxon developed this unique design more than 20 years
ago, an industry first that is commonplace today.
The OD-9's
new circuit uses different output resistors than its predecessor. After
the unit's initial release it was discovered to have a high
susceptibility to noise due to static electricity buildup. To improve
performance, the values of the output resistors on the OD-9 were
increased, but their positions kept the same as the original. This
circuit change has no audible affect on the sound of the unit, save for
reducing unwanted noise levels. In addition, the OD-9 features True
Bypass Switching for natural, uncompromised tone in bypass.
Like
the OD808, the OD-9 provides the natural, mild overdrive of a tube amp
without sacrificing the guitar's original tone. It can also be used as
a clean booster to provide increased gain from an amplifier.

HARMONY CENTRAL USER REVIEWS:
Sound Quality: 10 I
own an Ibanez TS9. I really like this pedal, far better than TS808. TS9
has clear highs and better fidelity. Considering what I need out of a
distortion pedal in my current setup, where I need just a little more
juice & cut during solos on top of either already overdriven signal
or clean, none can do a better job than a TS9. True-bypass has become
such a hot thing nowadays. While it's such a tentalizing idea to
maintain the signal unaltered by the pedal cirtcuit when the pedal is
not in use, the question is how much different does it make, and is it
worth the extra money? The verdict is it REALLY does make a difference,
however with varying degrees of difference depending on the
pedals/manufacturers. Aside from all the analysis and comparison, the
Maxon pedal, standalone, is a great pedal.
Sound Quality: 10 I
have owned all existing versions ov tube screamers and that one is the
best. It has less mids and they are so sweet and juicy. All other TS
I've played had those papery mids I ve hated. True bypass is great if
you use good cables. Just great is my verdict. Most natural sounding
pedal I ve played. Best tube screamer ever produced. All my friends
musicians and the crowd in the audience love my tone.
Sound Quality: 8 Fantastic.
This is the best tubescreamer available. The OD9 is a midrange heavy
pedal like all tubescreamers but isn't thin sounding. It has a great
clear tone although a little on the nasal side do to the midrange boost
and slight bass drop. The true bypass switching works great, there is
no signal degradation at all when the pedal is off. Each of the control
knobs seem to have plenty of range. I think adding something to beef up
your tone just before the pedal really makes this thing shine. These
two pedals make my small champ sound exactly like a miniature version
of my friend's 1972 Marshall 50 watt head, a very thick tone.
Sound Quality: 10 Within
the parameters of the Tube Screamer world this pedal is the best. It
has the correct chip, it is noise free, it is built well. It has the
universal AC jack, it is housed in the good old T/S chassis, but most
importantly it sounds great! Smooth tube amp break up with a nice mid
range bite. Doesn't suck tone when off and works well with the amp when
it is on. |
